Genmaicha is a traditional Japanese tea. It’s made from green tea and roasted rice, which explains its name (“genmaicha” means “brown rice tea”). A fun fact: Lots of people call this “popcorn tea” because of its delicious smell.
Leafy Green sells a special blend of Genmaicha tea. We use white mochi rice, which gives the tea a more fragrant aroma. The rice is combined with the green tea after it’s steamed, dried and roasted. Our blend has more tea than the usual 1:1 ratio, which prevents it from having the burnt-rice flavor that turns off some customers.
Tasting Notes: Leafy Green’s Genmaicha blend has a sweet, warm, nutty flavor with a toasted-rice aroma.
While hot water steeping is suitable for all Japanese Green tea, we find that Genmaicha can taste bitter and astringent when water is too hot. We recommend warm water or cold water steeping for Genmaicha.
Warm Water Steeping
- Water temperature: 60–70˚C / 140–156˚F
- Steep tea for 1 to 1.5 minutes (the longer you wait, the stronger the tea will be).
- You can re-steep Genmaicha up to 2 times (2-3 minutes each). Please note: it’ll have a milder taste each time.
Cold Water Steeping
- Water temperature: 5–20˚C / 41–68˚F
- Pour cold water over tea leaves.
- Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight.
- Pour into cup and enjoy!
To make it easier for you to steep, Leafy Green places Genmaicha in teabags. The bags are organic and pyramid-shaped, which gives the leaves room to expand and infuse.
